Approximately one hundred Advanced Placement Seminar and Advanced
Placement Research students at Orange Vista High School were given a rare
glimpse into the journalistic process through a classroom visit by visual journalist Dr.
Tara Pixley. Dr. Pixley is an assistant professor of journalism at Temple University
and visiting fellow at Harvard’s Nieman Foundation of Journalism. During their visit,
professor Pixley shared their personal journey through a career in visual journalism
and the thought process that has gone into their stories and work.

Through AP Seminar and AP Research, Orange Vista sophomores, juniors and
seniors learn to conduct collegiate level research on various topics. Educator Ashely
Rodriguez and Educada founder Caden Choi collaborated on bringing Dr. Pixley’s
experiences into the classroom to kick off the school year and to fuel a love of
research and exploration.
Professor Pixley’s talk culminated in an engaging Q&A session with further student
inquiry into the research and journalistic process.
